Is there an age limit for IVF?
While there’s no fixed age limit, IVF success rates decline with age, especially after 40. Most clinics suggest age 45 as an upper limit, though each patient’s individual health is considered.
What is the success rate for IVF?
IVF success rates vary by age and individual factors. On average, women under 35 have a 40-50% success rate per cycle, while rates decrease with age, dropping to about 5-10% for women over 43.
How long should we try to conceive before seeing a doctor?
If you’re under 35, we suggest checking in with a fertility specialist after about a year of trying. For those over 35, it’s a good idea to reach out after six months of trying. A consultation can help explore options and guide you forward.
When can I confirm my pregnancy?
After the IVF cycle, you can confirm pregnancy with a hCG blood test about 10 days after the embryo transfer.
Can I opt for twins?
Having twins is a possible outcome with IVF, though it’s considered a risk rather than a selectable option. Identical twins may result from a single embryo (day 5 blastocyst) splitting, while non-identical twins can result if two day-3 embryos are transferred.
Which foods and habits should I avoid during IVF?
Avoid smoking, alcohol, and excessive caffeine, as well as processed foods. A balanced, healthy diet and moderate exercise can help support your IVF journey.
How long does IVF take?
IVF treatment typically takes around 2 weeks, beginning with 10-12 days of hormone injections to stimulate egg production. After monitoring, the eggs are retrieved and fertilised, followed by embryo transfer or freezing.
Can I choose the sex of my baby?
To consider sex selection, Genetic Testing (PGT) is required. This process doesn’t allow you to choose a specific sex but lets you select from the embryos that are already available. Your embryologist will guide you through this option.
Does age affect male fertility?
Yes, age can impact male fertility. While men produce sperm throughout their lives, sperm quality may decline with age, which can affect conception rates and the health of future pregnancies.
Should I come alone or bring my partner?
We encourage you to bring your partner, as fertility evaluations often involve both partners to get a full understanding of factors that may be impacting conception.
I previously had IVF - can I now just store my eggs?
Yes, you can choose to store your eggs without undergoing a full IVF cycle. A new egg retrieval cycle is done specifically for freezing, allowing you to preserve eggs for future use.
I heard IVF is painful. Is that true?
IVF generally isn’t painful, though some patients experience mild bloating and discomfort from hormone injections. During egg retrieval, anesthesia is used to ensure you’re comfortable, and any side effects are typically mild. Our team is here to make each step as smooth and comfortable as possible.
